Nitrile rubber cord (NBR) is a synthetic copolymer of acrylonitrile and butadiene that provides effective resistance to aromatic hydrocarbons, weak acids, hydraulic fluids, lubricating oils and petroleum. The elastomer has a broad operating temperature, offers moderate tensile strength and provides good resistance to abrasion. It does not perform well, however, against oxidation, weathering or ultraviolet light and is therefore unsuited for long term use in exposed external environments.
Nitrile cord is commonly used in sealing applications in the automotive and aeronautical sectors due to its resistance to petrochemicals. It can be bonded using cyanoacrylate adhesive (super glue) to form an effective O-ring and is available to buy online at PAR Direct in a range of stocked sizes.
